HEVC image and video compression used in HEIC and HEIF files was introduced as a significant improvement over existing JPEG, JPEG XR and JPEG 2000 formats in compression effectiveness.
In cropped 4Kx2K sequences for Ultra HDTV services with 2560x1600 resolution HEVC achieved 87% better compression than JPEG, 44% better compression than JPEG XR and 48% better compression than JPEG 2000.
In high resolution sequences for streaming and broadcast services with 1920x1080 resolution HEVC achieved 124% better compression than JPEG, 62% better compression than JPEG XR and 15% better compression than JPEG 2000.
In medium resolution sequences for Internet/mobile video services with 832x480 resolution HEVC achieved 122% better compression than JPEG, 53% better compression than JPEG XR and 50% better compression than JPEG 2000.
In low resolution sequences for services to resource constrained devices with 416x240 resolution HEVC achieved 110% better compression than JPEG, 47% better compression than JPEG XR and 43% better compression than JPEG 2000.
In 720p sequences for video conferencing applications with 1280x720 resolutions resolution HEVC achieved 170% better compression than JPEG, 73% better compression than JPEG XR and 23% better compression than JPEG 2000.
In computer screen content and computer generated content with 1024x768 and 1280x720 resolutions HEVC achieved 223% better compression than JPEG, 118% better compression than JPEG XR and 87% better compression than JPEG 2000.
On average on all tests HEVC compressed content 139% better than JPEG, 118% better than JPEG XR and 44% better than JPEG 2000.
